Consistent units

Consistent units

It is necessary to use consistent units in FEA software. Sometimes happen that input values order of magnitude does not come to my mind immediately i. e. density and acceleration input values into Ansys, especially when I start a new project. Therefore I prepared a very simple table of consistent units for Ansys. Firstly, let’s define a consistent system of units:
  • 1 force unit = 1 mass unit * 1 acceleration unit
  • 1 acceleration unit = 1 length unit / (1 time unit)^2
  • 1 density unit = 1 mass unit / (1 length unit)^3

As an example is used structural steel:

  • Young modulus = 210 000 MPa
  • Poisson’s ratio = 0.3
  • Density: 7850 kg/m3

And that’s it. I usually use units in the third row as highlighted.
